For what purpose is on-the-job instruction carried out?

When hiring a new employee in a company, initial OHS training should be conducted. Initial OHS training consists of two equally important parts: general training and on-the-job instruction. The Regulation of the Minister of Economy and Labour of 27 July 2004 on training in the field of occupational health and safety defines what on-the-job instruction is.

According to the regulations, on-the-job instruction is carried out before admission to perform work in a specific position u:

  • newly hired employees,
  • workers transferred to another workplace,
  • students undergoing practical vocational training and students undergoing student internship.

The training takes the form of instruction taking place at the position where the employed person will work. When an employee performs his work at different workstations, he must undergo on-the-job instruction at each of these positions.

On-the-job instruction must last at least 8 hours. But the exact duration of its duration is determined by such factors as:

  • the worker’s professional training;
  • the employee’s length of service;
  • the type of work performed by the worker;
  • hazards at the workplace where he is to perform his work.

On-the-job instruction is designed to prepare the employee to perform work safely. During this training, the employee learns about:

  • the factors of the working environment at the workplace and in its immediate vicinity;
  • occupational risks related to the work performed;
  • methods of protection against accident and health hazards under normal operating and emergency conditions;
  • methods of safe performance of work in a given position.

On-the-job instruction is carried out by the person directing the employees or the employer. Only if they have appropriate qualifications, professional experience and have been trained in the methods of conducting on-the-job instruction. This is because the trainer has knowledge of the job and has periodic training for employers and other managers of employees.

The employee is obliged to confirm the on-the-job instruction in writing in the initial training card in the field of Occupational Safety and Health. In addition, the training card should indicate the name and surname of the instruction provider and the signature of the head of the organizational unit must be submitted. The completed OHS initial training card should be kept in the employee’s personal file in part B.

Conducting on-the-job instruction to an employee is one of the obligations arising from the provisions on occupational health and safety. Thanks to it, the employee will gain knowledge about the conditions in which he will perform his work. Information about such training should be included in the initial OHS training card.
