What is the purpose of on-the-job training?

When a new employee is hired in the company, initial occupational health and safety training should be conducted. Initial occupational health and safety training consists of two equally important parts: general training and on-the-job training. The Regulation of the Minister of Economy and Labor of July 27, 2004 on training in the field of occupational health and safety defines what on-the-job training is.

According to the regulations, on-the-job training is carried out before being allowed to work in a specific position at:

  • newly hired employees,
  • employees transferred to another job position,
  • students undergoing practical vocational training and students undergoing student internships.

The training takes the form of instruction taking place at the position where the employed person will work. When an employee performs his work at various job positions, he must undergo on-the-job training at each of these positions.

On-the-job training must be organized before starting work at a given position!

On-the-job training must last at least 8 hours. But the exact duration is determined by factors such as:

  • employee’s professional preparation;
  • employee’s length of service;
  • the type of work performed by the employee;
  • hazards at the workplace where he/she is supposed to perform his/her work.

On-the-job training is intended to prepare the employee to perform work safely. During this training, the employee learns about:

  • factors occurring in the work environment at a given workplace and its immediate surroundings;
  • occupational risk related to the work performed;
  • methods of protection against accident and health hazards in normal working conditions and in emergency conditions;
  • methods of safely performing work at a given position.

On-the-job training is conducted by the person managing the employees or the employer. Only if they have appropriate qualifications, professional experience and have been trained in the methods of conducting on-the-job training. This is because the trainer has knowledge about a given job position and has completed periodic training for employers and other people managing employees.

The employee is obliged to confirm completion of on-the-job training in writing in the initial training card in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. In addition, the training card should indicate the name and surname of the person conducting the instruction and must be signed by the head of the organizational unit. The completed initial occupational health and safety training card should be kept in the employee’s personal file in part B.

Providing an employee with on-the-job training is one of the obligations arising from the provisions on occupational health and safety. Thanks to it, the employee will gain knowledge about the conditions in which he will perform his work. Information about such training should be included in the initial occupational health and safety training card.
