What is motivational dialogue?

The concept is based on the assumption that a person rarely changes under the influence of external motivation. A much better solution is to support him in finding intrinsic motivation.

In the case of motivating dialogue, humility and curiosity are the starting points. We don’t know what might make the other person change their mind, but we really want to find out. It’s not about telling anyone what to do. Rather, the idea is to break the interlocutor out of the cycle of affirming oneself in beliefs and help him see new possibilities. The task of the leader of such a dialogue is to raise the mirror so that his interlocutor can see through it, and then give him the feeling that he could easily change his beliefs and behaviors. In this way, belief verification cycles can be triggered, within which views will be subjected to a more scientific analysis. The participant in the dialogue becomes humble in relation to his knowledge, so he begins to doubt the correctness of his beliefs and show curiosity about alternative points of view.

Conducting a motivating dialogue requires mastering the ability to use three basic techniques, namely:

  • from asking open questions,
  • from reflective listening,
  • from recognizing the other person’s desires and potential to bring about change.

Today, motivational dialogue is used by tens of thousands of practitioners around the world. In America and many parts of Europe, you can even undergo a specialist registration procedure, and courses to acquire professional skills are conducted on a large scale in Argentina, Malaysia and South Africa. The effectiveness of motivational dialogue has been studied in more than a thousand trials involving a control group, and the bibliography on this subject alone covers 67 pages. Healthcare professionals are successfully using this method to support patients who want to quit smoking, abuse alcohol or drugs, as well as those addicted to gambling or have dangerous sexual relationships. The method also works well as a support in the process of changing the diet and shaping habits in the area of physical activity, supports overcoming eating disorders and helps to get rid of unnecessary kilograms. It is praised by coaches who work with players on determination, teachers encouraging students to sleep at night and consultants preparing teams for changes in the organization. It is being used to good effect by public health professionals who encourage the people of Zambia to disinfect their water, and by environmentalists who are trying to encourage people to take a greater interest in the phenomenon of climate change. Similar techniques are used to persuade the iron political electorate to change their minds, as well as to help conflicting parents resolve a dispute over custody of their children through mediation (compared to classic methods of mediation, motivational dialogues increase the likelihood of a full agreement by as much as twofold).
