What are the rules of safe work on a portable ladder?

Work performed on a ladder and ladder is classified as particularly dangerous work, therefore, before you start working with them, you should familiarize yourself with the principles of safe use of this equipment.

The ladder is the basic equipment for working at height. As a reminder, work at height within the meaning of the ordinance on general health and safety regulations is work performed on a surface at a height of at least 1.0 m above the floor or ground level. On the other hand, work at height is considered hazardous work. However, it should be borne in mind that ladders can only be used as workstations in conditions where the use of more secure equipment (e.g. work platforms) is not justified due to the low level of risk or short-term work.

General rules for safe work on a ladder:

Before working on a ladder, be sure to read the ladder safety instructions.

Safe use of the ladder can be ensured by:

  • proper selection of a ladder for the job,
  • each inspection of its technical condition
  • proper use of the equipment,
  • taking appropriate precautions.

A portable ladder should be used in accordance with its intended purpose, in a way that guarantees the safety of the user and people in the vicinity.

When using a multi-piece, combined or extendable ladder, the different parts must not be moved in relation to each other. First of all, the ladder must not be overloaded – the weight of the user together with the equipment must not exceed the load capacity of the ladder specified by the manufacturer.

It is the user’s responsibility to adhere to the safety signs and information on the ladder.

Work clothes must be worn when working on a ladder. Sweatshirts must be fastened and the cuffs of the sleeves must not hang loose. As for footwear, full shoes with a non-slip sole should be worn.

During certain activities related to the use of the ladder, you should also use work gloves and a protective helmet with the current date of use (specified by the manufacturer) and other personal protective equipment, depending on the existing hazards.

Rules for using a leaning ladder

  • Before using the ladder, always check its technical condition.
  • Make sure that the ground on which the ladder is to be placed is even, hard and non-slip.
  • The ladder must be properly fastened and secured against slipping. To do this, find a strong support point for the top of the ladder and secure both upper ends of the side members. It is forbidden to lean the ladder against e.g. a plastic gutter.
  • The upper edge of the ladder should protrude at least 75 cm above the level it leads to, unless other fall protection is provided, eg a safe and stable hand grip is provided
  • The ladder should be placed at an angle of 65 ° to 75 °.
  • If the ladder is placed next to poles or pipes, fasten it to them.
  • Use the stabilizer at the bottom of the ladder to prevent it from tipping over.
  • Only one person is allowed to work on the ladder.
  • Ascend and descend only facing the ladder, holding onto the rungs and not stringers with your hands. When ascending, the rungs should stick to the grip.
  • There are three points on the ladder to support – two feet and a hand, or two hands and a foot should be in contact with the ladder.
  • Avoid carrying or lifting heavy objects up the ladder – the maximum load is 10 kg.
  • Do not carry anything on your hands when climbing. Use e.g. bags or tool belts to carry tools, equipment or small items. The rungs should be grasped with your hands.
  • Do not stand on one of the top three rungs of a leaning ladder, unless there is fall protection on the last rung, eg a hand grip. The belt buckle should be between the side members of the ladder and both feet should be on the same rung.
  • Do not lean beyond the outline of the ladder.

Rules for using a spacing ladder

  • Before using the ladder, always check its technical condition.
  • Make sure that the ground on which the ladder is placed is even, hard and non-slip.
  • Sufficient space must be provided for the ladder to be fully erected
  • Set up the ladder in such a way that the securing in the form of, for example, a chain or a rope, is fully taut. In addition, locking mechanisms must be provided.
  • Do not straddle the top of the ladder while working.
  • When using a ladder, you must not stand on one of the two highest rungs of the ladder, unless it has a safe grip for your hands.
  • Do not work standing sideways to the ladder.
  • The ladder should be positioned so that it is possible to reach the desired place without the need to lean too much.
