What are the qualities of a good mediator?

Mediation is a structured process in which a third party is involved in order to resolve a conflict between negotiating partners. The mediator must be absolutely impartial and not emotionally involved in the case. It must also be accepted by both conflicting parties. He should look at the conflict from a certain perspective and look for areas of agreement. Finally, together with its negotiating partners, it should develop recommendations that will be acceptable to both parties.

A good mediator should:

  • be trustworthy;
  • remain neutral towards the parties to the conflict and towards the object of the conflict;
  • understand the location of each party;
  • be guided by the interests of the parties involved in the conflict;
  • involve the parties in mutual agreements;
  • bear in mind the aim of finding the most satisfactory solution for the parties;
  • ensure, as far as possible, psychological comfort to the feuding parties;
  • keep confidential the information entrusted to him.

A good mediator should not:

  • try to change the mind of either party;
  • decide for yourself;
  • toss your own solutions to the pages.

From a technical point of view, mediation should take place in several stages:

  • Initiating work contact with parties
  • Assessment of the situation and preparation of the parties for the process
  • Opening session for pages
  • Page-specific session
  • Mediation minutes
  • Agreement or lack of agreement
