How should I take care of health and safety in stock?

Working in a warehouse carries many risks for both employees and bystanders. It is the employer who is responsible for the proper organization of the workplace, in accordance with the principles of health and safety at work and the Labour Code.

The new employee should have pre-tests, initial OSH training and job instruction, as well as be authorised to drive vehicles e.g. forklifts. The supervisor should take care of the employee’s knowledge in the context of health and safety, as well as communicate to him the basic principles of the workplace. The staff member should have access to the necessary position instructions.

The employer should provide workers with personal protective equipment, including protective and working clothing, work shoes and safety helmets. When working in a warehouse, especially remember to protect your legs – this will help protect workers from exposure to mechanical injuries, e.g. crushing of the fingers.

The halls should be organised in such a way that the warehouse staff have easy access to the stored materials and ensure an adequate width of transport routes. Importantly, the patency of all communication lines should be maintained and all safety exits and escape routes should be not set up.

The employer should ensure that all types of equipment and tools are maintained in good technical condition. Their use and maintenance should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not exceed the permissible weight of the transport equipment.

High storage facilities shall be those in which storage takes place at a height of more than 7 metres or the building is at least 12 metres high and its space is filled to the maximum height with storage racks. This is not included in the legislation, but this definition is widely used. It is worth remembering that in high-storage warehouses work should be done by people who:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • They have the appropriate education – a minimum of vocational or general education with apprenticeships.
  • They have important health and safety training.

The storage of hazardous and chemical substances requires additional technical solutions. The equipment intended for this warehouse should additionally include equipment such as mechanical fans, emergency showers, eye rinses or hot water washbasins.

Efficient fire infrastructure is also extremely important.

Warehouses typically use forklifts, lifts, transporters and levers to transport goods. This is why the patency of transport routes, proper training and the concentration of employees are so important.
