What is employee volunteering?

Employee volunteering should be understood as the provision of employees of companies in the framework of voluntary activities to social organisations. Employee volunteering can take many forms.

It aims to benefit both employers and employees, as well as non-governmental (social) organisations and the local community.

Financial assistance is one of the simplest forms of employee volunteering, although it is not uniform. This aid may consist, for example, in collecting a certain amount of money intended for social purposes (either by employees or by the organisation itself) and then multiplying it by the company. Another form of financial assistance is the valuation of a worker’s working time for a social organisation and the transfer of the cash equivalent for that time to the organisation. Financial support can also be said to be provided when an employer uses the services of a social organisation (e.g. advertising). Thanks to this, the organization, implementing its statutory objectives, obtains funds and the company has the opportunity to include the ordered services in its costs.

In-kind aid is nothing more than the transfer of equipment, certain products, premises or premises to a social organisation. The employer may also lend the aforementioned items. This form of volunteering is so convenient that it allows more control over the use of the funds offered by the organisation.

Voluntary engagement also includes the provision of free services to public benefit organisations. Sometimes some of the company’s resources are not fully used, and volunteering is an excellent form for the development of such funds (e.g. premises not used by the company).

Write-offs are also a form of financial assistance. Employees may declare (on a voluntary basis) the regular transfer of a small sum (the employee himself determines its size) from the salary to a particular social organisation or to the implementation of a specific social programme.

It is also a manifestation of employee volunteering to support the employee in his social activities, for the benefit of those in need. The volunteer worker engages his knowledge and skills in the achievement of a social goal, and the employer who delegates the employee as a volunteer provides him with financial, logistical or physical support.

Volunteer staff can provide support:

  • training, consultation, office assistance, etc.,
  • by organising the collection of food, clothing, toys or books,
  • service works – renovation and construction works,
  • assistance to the other person – tutoring, assistance to the elderly (official matters, current affairs of everyday life).
