What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

In the world of modern technologies and rapid development of enterprises, the impact of the individual on climate change and caring for the ecosystem as a whole is becoming more and more important. The negative impact of man on the natural environment is more visible and measurable. That is why experts are increasingly emphasizing the importance of taking care of the needs of the current generation in a sustainable way, taking into account the natural environment and the future of future generations.

SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) is a set of activities aimed at achieving sustainable development in its three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. It is a kind of plan for the transformation and transformation of the world, in which the needs of the present generation are met in such a way as to take into account the future of future generations.

The principle of sustainable development was developed in 2015 by the leaders of 193 UN member states as the document „Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. It contains the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which identify the most important challenges of our time in 5 areas: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. The principle of sustainable development aims to support the construction of a better world for the benefit of the inhabitants of the planet.

The 2030 Agenda refers to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals and Objectives are a continuation of the Millennium Development Goals, which were in force between 2000 and 2015. In addition to the 17 SDGs, the resolution also includes 169 side objectives and 232 indicators that will measure the degree of their implementation.

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are:

  • No more poverty.
  • Zero hunger.
  • Good health and quality of life.
  • Good quality education.
  • Gender equality.
  • Clean water and sanitation.
  • Clean and accessible energy.
  • Economic growth and decent work.
  • Innovation, industry, infrastructure.
  • Less inequality.
  • Sustainable cities and communities.
  • Responsible consumption and production.
  • Climate action.
  • Life underwater.
  • Life on land.
  • Peace, justice and strong institutions.
  • Partnerships for goals.

The SDGs represent an integrated vision of a sustainable world. Governments, the private sector and communities need to work together. It is particularly important for companies, regardless of size, to solve development problems as creatively and innovatively as possible.

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) assume that poverty will end poverty and eliminate social inequalities and injustices in the coming years. Climate protection measures are also important. While progress is already being made in many countries, much more work and awareness is needed to achieve the SGD goals. The list of actions to be taken covers almost all areas of our lives.

Sustainable development means a full balance between the three factors of civilization progress: economic, social and ecological. Put simply, sustainability is a way of „governing” the planet in such a way that the well-being of the present generation does not limit the degree to which the needs of future generations are met. The implementation of the SDGs should take place at both national and individual level, so as to find a solution that strikes a balance between the three dimensions mentioned above. Making rational decisions and searching for optimal solutions is to contribute to solving global problems described in the 17 SGD goals.

Sustainable development can be achieved, m.in by:

  • reducing the consumption of renewable and non-renewable resources,
  • gradual elimination of hazardous and toxic substances from economic processes,
  • striving to provide citizens with a sense of security and well-being,
  • keep pollutant emissions as low as possible.

Poland, like the rest of the UN countries, has committed itself to implementing the assumptions set out in the 2030 Agenda. At the governmental, local and individual level, it undertook to integrate the 17 SDGs into national development policy, to create an institutional structure, and to ensure that progress is monitored.
