What are the health and safety rules for demolition work?

Carrying out demolition works requires proper preparation, including compliance with health and safety standards and regulations. Otherwise, during these works there is an increased risk of accidents, including those causing damage to the health of employees. Any such work should be preceded by appropriate preparation.

Before proceeding with the demolition work, it is necessary to properly prepare for it. First of all, the contractor should obtain the necessary permit to carry out demolition works. This document is issued by the administration body competent for a given location, including the staroste. The preparation also includes:

  • preparation of design documentation for demolition works;
  • fencing of the demolition site and marking it with warning boards;
  • disconnection of the facility from the heating, gas, teletechnical, power, sewage and water supply networks.

During demolition works, special attention should be paid to the use of chutes or inclined chutes to remove debris. At the same time, the chutes should be secured in such a way as to prevent debris from falling out. If the contractor decides to carry out demolition works using the tipping method, the length of the ropes used should be three times greater than the height of the given structure. Each fastener should be carefully checked and replaced if in doubt. It is extremely important that they remain reliable when tipping over the object. Otherwise, it threatens a real threat to employees.

Demolition works cannot be carried out in difficult weather conditions, when the wind threatens to overturn part of the structure. Work should be stopped whenever the wind speed exceeds 10 m/s. In some situations, the reason for stopping may be lower wind speed and it depends on the individual specificity of the structure of the facility. In addition, no people are allowed on the lower floors of the building during the works. Under no circumstances may the Contractor overturn parts of the structure (e.g. walls) by undercutting or undermining them. When choosing mechanized demolition methods, there must be no people or machines in the danger zone.

When carrying out demolition work, every detail matters. The contractor should strictly comply with applicable health and safety regulations and standards. However, if, while observing the health and safety regulations, there is still a real threat to human health and life, the demolition works should be stopped and resumed under favorable conditions, or the method used so far should be changed. This type of work should only be performed by experienced specialists and with extreme caution.
