How to use an AED defibrillator?

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that can save lives in the event of sudden cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation or irregular heart rhythm. However, to benefit from this valuable aid, it is important to know how to use it.

Defibrillation is a key action in saving the life of a patient with cardiac arrest. Ventricular fibrillation or an irregular heart rhythm can lead to a lack of blood flow to the organs, which can result in brain damage or death. An AED defibrillator delivers precise instructions and an electrical impulse that can restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

AED defibrillators really make saving lives easier. Especially since the semi-automatic defibrillator and the automatic model are becoming more and more popular. The device then decides whether defibrillation of the patient is necessary.

It is very important that you know how a defibrillator works. This way you will be able to use it when necessary. That’s why we have prepared a short manual that will help you learn how to properly turn on the AED device and, above all, how to properly use the defibrillator.

  • SECURE THE SPACE AND THE PATIENT

The first step is to make sure the area is safe for both you and the patient. Check for hazards such as fire or toxic substances. Then make sure the patient is not breathing and has a normal heart rhythm.

  • CALL MEDICAL HELP

Call for medical help immediately or make sure someone else does. Time is of the essence in cardiac arrest.

  • FIND A DEFIBRILLATOR

If available, find the nearest AED. More and more public places are equipped with these devices, such as airports, shopping centers and playgrounds.

  • TURN ON THE AED DEFIBRILLATOR

After opening the AED, turn it on by pressing the power button. The device will guide you through the process and provide precise voice or visual instructions.

  • PREPARE THE PATIENT

If the patient’s skin is wet, wipe it dry. Make sure the patient’s chest is dry and exposed.

  • PLACE THE ELECTRODES

Remove the packaging from the electrodes and place them on the device according to the instructions. Typically, one electrode is placed on the upper chest and the other on the side of the chest to ensure adequate conductivity.

  • STOP!

Once the electrodes are placed, the AED will assess the patient’s heart rhythm and adjust to the situation. Make sure no one touches the patient while the device is analyzing the rhythm.

  • START THE DEFIBRILLATION PROCESS

If the AED detects an unstable heart rhythm or ventricular fibrillation, it will deliver an electrical shock. Make sure no one is in contact with the patient, then press the shock delivery button as instructed by the device.

  • CONTINUE RESUSCITATION

Once the shock has been delivered, continue cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to current guidelines.

An Automated External Defibrillator should be used when sudden cardiac arrest has occurred due to ventricular fibrillation or irregular heart rhythm. Ventricular fibrillation is a condition in which the heart beats erratically and does not pump blood effectively. This is a very dangerous situation that can lead to death within minutes, so it is necessary to use an AED as soon as possible.

The most important situations in which an AED should be used are:

  • Cardiac Arrest: When someone suddenly stops breathing and there is no normal heart rhythm, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be started immediately and an AED should be used – regardless of whether a semi-automatic or automatic model is available.
  • Losing Consciousness Without Normal Breathing: If someone is unconscious and not breathing normally, an AED is necessary to save a life. However, it is necessary to first assess the patient’s condition.
  • After calling for medical help: Once you have called for medical help, use an AED as soon as possible if one is available.

It is also worth emphasizing that the AED defibrillator is intended for users without specialized medical training. This device instructs the person providing assistance with voice and visual instructions. Thus, even in such a stressful situation, the user is constantly guided through the defibrillation process. Therefore, anyone experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest should definitely try to use an AED – even if they are not a professional paramedic.
