How to prevent cervical spine ailments?

Ailments of the cervical spine are one of the most common diseases that employees in Poland complain about. For many years, they have been among the leading causes of sickness absence in our country. They are not only a serious nuisance, but also generate significant costs related to medical care and inability to work.

The most common degenerative changes in the cervical spine are observed at the level of the intervertebral spaces C5-C6 and C6-C7, which, due to their mobility, are particularly exposed to a number of overloads. The main symptoms of the cervical spine pain syndrome include local pain in the neck area and limitations in rotational movements of the head. There may also be problems with keeping the arms up and lifting objects, and even problems with sleeping, dizziness and depressed mood. The initial symptoms may be episodic, and in the following months or even years, if not treated properly, they often become chronic.

There are many causes of back pain, which, apart from an unhealthy lifestyle, is significantly influenced by the development of modern technologies. On the other hand, among the occupational risk factors for pain in the cervical spine, the following are mentioned: ergonomic maladjustment of the workplace to the capabilities of the employee and the professional activities performed by him, work performed in a forced body position, excessive time spent in static positions and performing monotype movements, excessive physical effort exposure to vibration, as well as chronic stress that increases muscle tension.

Physical activity is an important element of health prevention. Its effect on the prevention of musculoskeletal system ailments is also scientifically proven. One of the methods of physiotherapy, used both in the prevention and treatment of pain in the cervical spine, is kinesitherapy (treatment with movement).
