What types of people should you be friends with at work?

Building relationships in the workplace is not easy, especially now that many companies work remotely or in a hybrid way. However, friends at work are more important than you might think. Certain acquaintances are worth taking care of especially, because they can have a significant impact on our sense of happiness and career.

Let’s start by stating the obvious: no one can be forced to be friends. This type of relationship develops naturally – as a result of genuine interest and openness to the other person. Nobody casts friends. This does not happen in private or professional life.

Friendship in the workplace gives a sense of belonging, prevents exclusion or isolation, promotes greater commitment, shapes the feeling of professional satisfaction, and also minimizes the effects of stress. It affects the experience of job satisfaction, which translates into the fact that we are more willing to perform tasks. It is a great help and support, especially in difficult times. Experiencing support reduces the level of stress associated with performing everyday duties – explained Marta Drinčić, a psychologist and Helping Hand expert, in an interview with money.pl.

As we read on the Fortune website, according to Danielle Bayard Jackson, a friendship coach, certain acquaintances at work are worth taking special care of. There are people with whom building relationships „pays off” exceptionally. Let us add that this is not about cold calculation and calculation in choosing colleagues with a view, for example, to a future promotion. It’s about realizing that if there are people around us who have a good influence on us, it’s worth keeping in regular contact with them.

Here are three types of people who, according to the expert, may prove particularly important in your professional life:

  • Cheering

A cheerleader in your company is someone who always enthusiastically celebrates the successes of others. Each time he will congratulate you on completing your project. It will also show appreciation when you present a successful idea at a meeting. The cheering person is usually open and talkative, genuinely concerned about the well-being and success of others. According to Jackson, these people „have the qualities you look for in a work friend.” The expert notes that a cheerer is a friend you can trust, sharing your achievements with him. He wants you to do well because he doesn’t feel the need to compete.

  • Optimist

If you can count on the support of an optimist at work, it will have a good influence on you. This is the person who will motivate you to act even in the face of setbacks. You can rely on such a friend in various situations, e.g. when you need support while working on an important project, or when you have a difficult conversation with your boss, we read in Fortune.

  • A sensitive observer

People with high sensitivity are extremely observant observers. They can sense the dynamics and notice details that others usually miss.

While most highly sensitive people are introverts, that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t open to making friends. They can be great friends because they are empathetic and can help people deal with emotions and challenges.
