What hazardous substances can we deal with in the workplace?

The safety of the slingshot is usually associated with physical threats. A lot of attention is paid to preventing situations that pose a risk of fire or explosion. Much less often, OSH is associated with hazards associated with the presence of hazardous substances in the workplace. Both workers and employers should be aware of the risks of improper handling of such substances.

It should be stressed that the risks associated with contact with chemicals are not limited to the chemical industry, they apply to almost every industry.

The basis, of course, is knowledge. All relevant information on a dangerous substance can be found in the Safety Data Sheet. These are: a description of the hazards that the substance may cause, basic physicochemical data, methods of preventing the hazards posed by the substance, procedures to be followed in the event of an accident. The employer is obliged to provide employees with access to current safety data sheets.

When choosing chemicals, the principle of risk reduction should be followed. Of all the possible substances, the least dangerous one is always chosen. The use of hazardous substances is only possible if all possible safety measures (personal and collective protective equipment) are provided to workers. Attention should be paid to proper storage, i.e. the use of appropriate packaging and their visible marking allowing easy identification. Dangerous substances cannot be stored without up-to-date records of their condition and without up-to-date safety data sheets.

The rules for the classification of chemical substances and mixtures thereof with regard to hazards to health or life, the list of hazardous chemical substances, the requirements for safety data sheets and the manner in which they are labelled are determined, inter alia, by provisions such as:

  • Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, amending and repealing Directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC and amending Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006
  • Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), establishing a European Chemicals Agency, amending Directive 1999/45/EC and repealing Council Regulation (EEC) No 793/93 and Commission Regulation (EC) No 1488/94 as well as Council Directive 76/769/EEC and Commission Directives 91/155/EEC,  93/67/EEC, 93/105/EC and 2000/21/EC
  • Act of 25 February 2011 on chemical substances and their mixtures.
