How to build relationships with colleagues?

If we care about the success of the company, we must be aware of how much it is influenced by proper communication in the company. On the other hand, good communication cannot be said if we do not have an appropriate relationship with colleagues. The atmosphere of the workplace is crucial for many of us and affects our commitment and motivation to work. It includes, of course, how we get along with others and how we feel in their company.

Just because we want to have a good relationship with our colleagues won’t automatically make them that way. They require a lot of work on our part and commitment on both sides.  Ourrelationships with colleagues are influenced by:

  • Propriety

The most ordinary personal culture is very important, which, unfortunately, in the daily multitude of tasks we sometimes forget. Apologizing, thanking, not being late for meetings – it does not require much effort, and makes our co-worker come to us in a completely different way.

  • Not imposing your own opinion on others

How many people, so many opinions. However, it is not worth being convinced that only we are right, our views and our opinion are the most correct, and everyone else is wrong if they do not agree with us. It is worth talking, listening to another person’s side, saying what we think about it, but not letting it be understood that if someone thinks differently, they do not know anything.

  • Active listening

A feature that definitely builds good relationships with colleagues is active listening, which we wrote more about in the previous part of our series. In general, it’s about listening to what someone has to say, understanding them, and giving their view on the issue or problem.

  • Relieving tension with a sense of humor

Certainly no one likes to walk all day with a serious face. It is good to allow yourself to joke from time to time, relieve tension, laugh a bit. It will not hurt anyone, and it can positively affect the atmosphere in the workplace.

  • Empathy

To build a good relationship with colleagues, you will also need empathy, that is, compassion, the ability to „step into someone’s shoes”. Thanks to this, it is easier for us to understand the other person, his behavior, point of view. Therefore, empathy is very important not only to be a good listener, but also to build positive relationships.

  • Sincerity

Honesty is also important. We should not promise anyone anything that we cannot fulfill, give information about which we are not sure. Honesty makes us gain the trust of colleagues, which is crucial.

  • Understanding that we are different

It is worth remembering that we are different, everyone has the right to live as he wants and to be as he wants. We cannot interfere with this if someone is at peace with himself, even if we have a completely different view of the world. Understanding that everyone is different will help build healthy relationships.

  • Mutual respect

Mutual respect is, of course, very important. It is worth showing it to each other regardless of whether we like each other or not. Thanks to this, relationships will be healthier and we will cooperate better.

  • Admitting mistakes

Being able to admit mistakes makes people trust us more. They see that we are like them, imperfect, that we are not to be feared. This is especially important in the boss-employee relationship.

Building good relations with employees is crucial to build a good atmosphere, effective communication and thus the success of the company.
