What was the ILO World Summit about in July this year – COVID-19 and the world of work?

On July 1, 2020, a virtual Regional Meeting for Europe and Central Asia took place as part of the ILO Global Summit: COVID-19 and the world of work: Building a better future for work.
The aim of the meeting was to identify the specific problems facing governments and social partners in Europe and Central Asia, to provide an opportunity to share knowledge on immediate crisis responses, as well as ways to ensure long-term, fair and sustainable recovery.
The meeting was attended, among others, by the labor ministers of Germany, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Lithuania, the Commissioner for Jobs and Social Affairs, European and national social partners, who presented the steps taken in their countries and in the EU to combat the negative social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the manner of their development and activities related to overcoming the crisis. Almost all participants emphasized the importance of social dialogue in developing solutions, ensuring social peace and post-crisis recovery. Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labor Office, gave the introductory speech.

During the meeting, two panel discussions were held on „Supporting enterprises, jobs and income” and „Protection of employees in the workplace”. The full agenda for the meeting is below.

The ILO World Summit – COVID-19 and the world of work was organized by the International Labor Organization in a year in which the International Labor Conference was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It provided a virtual platform for exchanging experiences and discussing the impact of the pandemic on the world of work one year after the celebration of the ILO’s century and the adoption of the ILO’s Declaration of the Century on the future of work.
As part of the Summit:

  • On July 1 and 2, 5 regional events took place: Arab Countries, Europe and Central Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Africa and the Americas
  • On July 7, during the Regional Day, the most important elements of the discussion of regional events were summarized
  • On July 8, World Leaders’ Day was held, bringing together heads of state and government. It was also attended by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres
  • The ILO Tripartite Partners Day took place on 9 July, attended by labor ministers and representatives of trade unions and employers’ organizations from around the world.
