What is the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) education fund?

The purpose of the fund is to support and develop competences for members and elected representatives of unions. The fund provides support for a full year (2 semesters) of full-time or part-time studies at universities and colleges, high schools, high schools and elementary schools or their equivalent in adult education organizations.

The scholarship / support is granted to cover the following costs:

  • courses,
  • examination fees,
  • expenses for temporary accommodation during education,
  • materials,

Support in the fund is tax-free.

You can also apply for a grant from the LO education fund for shorter periods, for example:

  • education and courses directly related to the profession or retraining to another profession,
  • co-financing for apprentices,
  • general education to test competences,
  • primary school,
  • training activities as part of organizational and corporate development in conjunction with companies.
  • short IT courses

The right to apply for funds from the fund is available to union members who, at the time of submitting the application, had been organized for at least the last 3 years and belonged to the tariff area which paid contributions to the Labor Fund or a collective labor agreement that would pay contributions to the Labor Fund, if still to exist.

The unemployed who belonged to the area before becoming unemployed are entitled to funds from the fund tariff covered by the program. For part-time employees, the fund covers up to 15 hours a week. Students and apprentices are only eligible for the fund for the first year after transitioning from being Ordinary union member to be a student member if they have already met the fund membership requirements. Apprentices are not covered by the fund as the apprenticeships are based on an internship.
