What is the happy method in negotiations?

Everyone has probably heard about win-win, a method that is supposed to bring satisfaction to all parties involved in the negotiation process. However, the world has not stopped, nor has the negotiations. The negotiation process is subject to constant research. The field is developing, innovative approaches are emerging.

The happy-happy s method is bought on relationships, on the satisfaction of the participants in the process and on cooperation during negotiations, but also in the future.

The author of this method claims that the mood, well-being of the negotiating people has a huge impact on the final effect of the process. It proves that thanks to a positive attitude and good humor, it is easy for us to solve problems and come to a satisfactory side of consensus.

He proposes five steps to make happy-happy:

  • Step 1 – Positive attitude.

Take care of them.

There are different ways – you can eat something tasty, you can listen to your favorite music, you can take a moment to train. The easiest way is probably to just smile.

  • Step 2 – Think about it!

It is a preparation for negotiations, an analysis of the situation, indicating the negotiating goals of both parties, and finally the way in which these parties will try to achieve their goals.

  • Step 3 – Build a relationship

Here it is important to establish good contact and build the right atmosphere. Asking questions and active listening help a lot.

  • Step 4 – Speak as you should

When speaking, one should talk about real needs (not positions or points of view) and about possible alternatives.

  • Step 5 – Prepare Plan B

This is nothing new, because the need to have an alternative is mandatory in the negotiation process. However, the author of the described method focuses on plan B, i.e. a different, new path of agreement with the current negotiating partner, and not the standard BATNA, i.e. a solution in case the current negotiations end in failure.

The originator of this method is Lars-Johan Age, PhD in economics at the Stockholm School of Economics. He studied negotiation at Harvard Law School and worked with negotiators from the Swedish police and the FBI. He analyzed the working methods of leading negotiators in business and diplomacy.
