What is the Farm to Fork Strategy?
The strategy aims to help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 by reorienting the EU’s current food system to a sustainable model.
Food security is a priority, but the strategy also includes:
- ensure, within the planet’s capabilities, a sufficient supply of affordable, nutrient-rich foods
- guarantee sustainable food production, m.in by significantly reducing the use of pesticides, antimicrobials and fertilisers and increasing organic production
- promote more sustainable food consumption and healthy eating
- reduce food loss and waste
- counter food fraud in the supply chain
- improve animal welfare.
In October 2020. The Council adopted conclusions on the Farm to Fork strategy, in which it supported the objective of creating a sustainable food system in Europe from production to consumption. The conclusions contain a threefold political message from Member States, which have agreed to ensure:
- a sufficient supply of affordable food, while contributing to the EU’s achievement of climate neutrality by 2050.
- fair income and strong support for primary producers
- the competitiveness of EU agriculture in the world.
