What is Re-manualization?

The Carbon Footprint Foundation in Krakow has published a report on our society’s knowledge of the carbon footprint. The report was prepared in cooperation with the Polish National Panel and the Circle of Sociology Students of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. It is a summary of annual surveys conducted on a representative group of nearly 1100 people, with a statistical error of 3%.

According to the report, the change in the ecological awareness of Poles is coming, but slowly and forcing individuals to act in the dark. More than 50% of respondents, however, state that they „would like to undertake more pro-climate activities”. It also turns out that economic obstacles are not the most important barrier to taking up activities – relatively few people identify with the term „I can’t afford to do something more for the environment”.

As many as 49% of Poles would like to do more to protect the natural environment, but they do not know where to start – according to the report.

We also learn from the report that the level of climate education in our society is still low, but at the same time we are open to changes in this area, and it is worth using this openness. Poles are increasingly recognizing environmental pollution and climate change as a significant threat. Individual actions are, in the opinion of the majority, the least responsible for the climate and ecological catastrophe. Despite everything, a large part of the respondents declare taking pro-climate actions of an individual nature, such as segregating garbage (82%) or using reusable bags (70%).

Half of us want to do more for the environment, but we need support because we don’t know where to start. We blame climate change most heavily on governments and corporations, and the least on ourselves as individuals. At the same time, we are stuck in the trap of individual actions: we prefer to segregate waste for the environment and climate, reduce energy and water consumption in our homes and use reusable bags. Acting in an organized way – we feel more agency, but we still do not combine ecology with our political choices, in the labor market or goods and services. By taking actions of a more systemic nature, we more often gain a sense of meaning in action. The image of Polish society is full of paradoxes: we put dots, but we do not connect them. That is why it is so important to educate both small and large, as well as to promote science so that it can resonate and break through the world of myths and fake news – said Agnieszka Rozwadowska, president of the Carbon Footprint Foundation.

Only 30% of the respondents gave the correct answer to the question of whether volcanoes emit more CO2 than humans.

In terms of the popular myths about climate change studied, it is clear that disinformation is taking its toll. Interestingly, as many as 32% of people believe that volcanoes emit more carbon dioxide than humans. Only 50% understand that in order to avoid the effects of a climate catastrophe in the near future, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero. On the other hand, 21% of respondents still assume that in the past such changes have already occurred on Earth – the myth „the climate has always changed” is still very popular.

– The universality of the „myth about volcanoes” shows how big gaps in climate education we are dealing with. It is worth considering extending climate education programs (which are still being created and are mainly aimed at people present in the formal education system) also to adults. In addition, this statistic proves that a lot of people are simply unsure of their knowledge about the climate crisis, which creates a field open to disinformation – says Dorota Guzik, the author of the report.

As many as 60% of respondents confirm that the carbon footprint is a measure of the fact that a given product or service affects climate change.

Awareness of the carbon footprint among Poles is still low. The report shows that as many as 40% have never encountered this term, and 60% do not understand it correctly. On the other hand, the term is increasingly used in the context of consumer choices.
