What is Green HRM?

Green HRM, or „green” human resource management, is a key tool in introducing sustainable development in a company that strives to achieve the goals of a green economy. It is an element of human resource management that takes into account the ecological context as the basis for personnel decisions. An important element, because people have the greatest impact on the construction of sustainable development of the enterprise – the company’s success depends precisely on the awareness of employees, activities, knowledge and their use. The main goal of GHRM is to shape the ecological sensitivity of employees, pro-ecological work environment and ecologically responsible attitudes of employees, which are then transferred to private life.

Green HRM (also GHRM) combines the concepts of environmental management and human resource management in order to develop “green” skills, motivate and ensure the pro-ecological activity of employees – by placing sustainable development at the centre of the human resources processes of the organization. GHRM practices have been divided into five categories of “green” approach to HR activities: planning, recruiting and selecting, development, motivating, and performance management.

Activities in the field of GHRM and sustainable development directly concern us and our children, our future. Environmental behaviour and taking care of nature ceased to be a non-obligatory, welcome gesture of goodwill, but it has become an obligation carried out individually and in larger communities and organizations, which has a real impact on the world in which we live.

The most visible signs of environmental degradation are:

  • more and more hot summers, less and less snow in winter, burning forests. It is getting drier, water shortages, glaciers in the mountains are disappearing, sea ice in the Arctic is disappearing, ice sheets are melting, sea levels are rising, the ocean is acidifying, bees are dying, biodiversity is disappearing, storms and tropical cyclones are disappearing, plastic is ubiquitous.
  • The LPI (Living Planet Index 2020) shows that worldwide the average population of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians has decreased by 68% since 1970. According to the published report of the WWF Living Planet Report 2020, this state of affairs is largely due to environmental degradation,
  • humanity is currently using 1.7 times more resources than the Earth is capable of reproducing. Every year we leave the environment in a deteriorating condition and reduce its ability to meet our future needs.

The implementation of GHRM tools is of great importance, especially in the field of sustainable development goals for enterprises, regions, countries and the world. These issues are dealt with by international strategies and documents, e.g. UN Agenda 21, Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth – Europe 2020, An European strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy. for all) and at the national level, the Strategy for Responsible Development until 2020 (with a perspective until 2030) – SRD.

The events related to the pandemic indicate that the activities of companies in the area of sustainable development and GHRM may become commonplace. The Council of the European Union emphasizes the importance of fighting the pandemic and the need to return to the path of sustainable growth, taking into account, inter alia, ecological transformation and digital transformation, learning lessons from the current crisis. Business practitioners also emphasize that in the long term, the pandemic and the resulting crisis will benefit companies developing in the mainstream of sustainable development and GHRM.

The problem of climate change and environmental pollution is so important that in the near future all companies will be forced to take action in the area of sustainable development. The richer the society we are, the more we ourselves will expect ecological actions from our employer, but also producers of favourite products or companies providing services. In the near future, a GHRM specialist or a sustainability specialist will be employed in each HR department. There is still a niche for such solutions in Poland.

The research results indicate that green human resource management in Poland is mainly used by large companies and corporations. In solutions in this area, companies in Poland are modelled on companies operating in Western Europe. Companies that have already implemented the ISO 14000 environmental management system are doing the best. This gives the belief that green human resource management will be an indispensable element of management in any company in the near future.

In modern times, environmental and social factors play a key role in the sustainable development of the organization. Therefore, activities in the area of GHRM should be promoted with particular emphasis.
