What are the rules in Norway regarding accident and sickness benefits?

  • An accident at work

The employer is obliged to inform the Labor Inspectorate (Arbeidstilsynet) when a fatal accident or other serious injury occurs. Examples of serious accidents are skull damage, bone damage, internal trauma, loss of body parts, poisoning, frostbite, burn, chemical burns, loss of consciousness, and injuries requiring hospitalization. The employer is also obliged to inform the Social Insurance Office (NAV) about injuries and diseases that may give rise to the right to benefits in the event of an accident at work. In addition, you may also be entitled to accident insurance under the Accident Insurance Act. Claims in this respect should be addressed to the insurance company with which the employer has signed an accident insurance contract.

  • Occupational disease

An occupational disease is understood as injury, illness or death as a result of an accident at work. Some diseases can be classified as occupational diseases if they are caused by the harmful effects of the working environment. The employer must notify the local NAV office of an injury resulting from an accident at work or an occupational disease. On the other hand, you are responsible for notifying your employer of the accident. If your employer has not done so, you can report the accident yourself.

  • Partial incapacity for work

If you are partially unable to work because of health problems or if your health problems limit your choice of profession or workplace, you may be entitled to special services or programs organized by NAV to help you return to work.

  • Benefit to restore working capacity

This allowance is intended to provide you with an income during a transition period where, due to illness or injury, you need vocational rehabilitation, medical treatment or other NAV assistance to start work. As a rule, you are required to be a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme for at least 3 years before you can claim benefits. If you have worked, all you need to do is be a member of the system for a year before you apply for benefits. In some cases, exceptions are allowed. People aged 18 to 67 who live or stay in Norway can apply for the allowance.

  • Disability benefits

You may be eligible for Disability Benefits if your wage or capacity for work is reduced by at least half as a result of persistent illness, injury or disability. Documentation must be made that treatment or vocational rehabilitation cannot improve earning capacity. NAV decides whether you meet the conditions for granting disability benefits. As a rule, you are required to be a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme for at least 3 years before applying for unemployment benefit. People aged 18 to 67 who are members of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme can apply.
