What are the modern forms of employment?

The future of the global labour market will be largely based on flexibility. The pandemic has proved to many companies that the use of modern forms of employment – temporary work, process outsourcing and service contracting – has often allowed them to survive and maintain business continuity in the most difficult moments. Fixed-term work is also increasingly becoming a conscious choice for white-collar workers. According to the Hays report „Modern forms of employment 2021”, 82 percent. temporary workers assess the conditions of this form of employment as good or very good.

The pandemic turmoil prompted more companies to look at modern forms of employment and develop internal procedures for using them. Employers declare greater openness to cooperation with white-collar workers for a specified period of time. These, in turn, are more and more willing to look at such forms of employment. As a consequence, specialists and managers are slowly changing the image of a temporary worker in Poland, stereotypically perceived as a person performing unskilled manual work and choosing this form of cooperation due to the lack of an alternative.

– Today it is often not the company but the candidates themselves who strive for flexible forms of employment. They usually motivate their decision with tax reasons, the desire to gain various experience or gain more independence, allowing them to manage their private calendar. Experts and managers who are willing to cooperate with companies on the basis of B2B contracts, appreciate the possibility of choosing projects related to a specific area of specialization and constituting a very tempting alternative to the traditional career path – notes Bartosz Dąbkowski, Director of the Response division at Hays Poland, expert on modern forms employments.

These are the conclusions of the Hays Poland report „Modern forms of employment 2021”, created together with the Greenberg Traurig law firm, in cooperation with the ARAW Business Support Centre and the Katowice City Hall. The publication was based on the answers collected between April and June 2021. The respondents included over 600 representatives of companies using modern forms of employment and nearly 1,000 white-collar temporary workers (temporary employees, interim managers, people providing services under B2B cooperation and outsourcing processes).

The popularity of modern forms of employment is growing, which was influenced, among others, by pandemic. During the last several months, some organizations have discovered the advantages of a flexible employment strategy that allows not only cost optimization, but also a quick response to emerging competency needs. Companies still focus their activities mainly on recruiting full-time employees, however, there is a growing interest in other, modern forms of employment – temporary work, B2B, outsourcing and interim projects. In 2021, plans to start cooperation with temporary workers were declared by 79 percent. companies, which is a result of 5 points. percent higher than before the pandemic. At the same time, 54 percent. companies cooperating with temporary workers forecast that their number will increase this year. As the reasons for using flexible forms of employment, organizations most often indicate the will to ensure flexibility in managing employment costs, the need to respond to increased demand for their products or services, as well as to acquire competences necessary to complete specific projects.

Employers assess the motivation of people employed for a specified period very positively – 94% of employees were positive about the involvement of temporary workers. companies covered by the study. At the same time, in the opinion of 11 percent. organization, they are even more involved in the tasks carried out than full-time employees. Hence – as market experts explain – if a company offers external employees competitive terms of cooperation, develops appropriate procedures and cooperates with a trustworthy service provider, it can gain a lot from such a solution.

– Employers unanimously declare that modern forms of employment meet their expectations, and the variety of available solutions allows them to meet the current needs of companies. It is easier for organizations to respond to new challenges when they can use forms of employment appropriate to the situation. Therefore, they highly appreciate the flexibility that goes hand in hand with employment for a specified period – explains Bartosz Dąbkowski from Hays.

Organizations also see barriers in implementing temporary work solutions. The legal aspects related to individual forms of non-permanent employment remain the greatest challenge. Over the year, the percentage of companies pointing to this problem increased by 20 percentage points. and currently amounts to 66 percent.

The largest percentage of white-collar workers cooperating with companies on the basis of modern forms of employment are young people who are just gaining professional experience. This is reflected in the responses of the survey respondents. The opportunity to gain experience indicated the most motivation to take up temporary work. At the same time, 44 percent. indicated the possibility of development as the best aspect of working for a specified period, and 43 percent – the possibility of staying in the company permanently.

There are, however, many experienced experts and managers among the temporary employees. They perceive modern forms of cooperation more often through the prism of attractive remuneration and the possibility of participating in interesting projects. It is for this group of employees that undertaking work for a specified period is most often a conscious, fully thought-out choice. Design work is an attractive alternative for them to full-time work in one company.
