What are the conditions of an employment contract in Norway?

Everyone has the right to a written contract of employment, regardless of the length of the employment relationship or working time. The employment contract sets out the rights and obligations of the employee and the employer and must always contain the following information:

  • between whom the contract was concluded,
  • workplace,
  • type of job or job description,
  • date of commencement of the employment relationship,
  • expected period of work (if the work is temporary),
  • right to leave and holiday benefits, trial period (if agreed),
  • breaks
  • possible collective agreements (tariffavtaler) governing the employment relationship.

The employer must draw up a contract proposal as soon as possible, and no later than one month after the commencement of the employment relationship.

The total working time (arbeidstid) should as a rule not exceed nine hours in 24 hours and 40 hours in seven days. If you work in multiple shift patterns, the weekly working hours are either 38 hours or 36 hours over seven days, depending on what type of shift system is in place at your workplace. It is allowed to establish a different division of working time than the above-mentioned, the so-called average working hours. In this case, a written contract is required. Such regulation means that an employee may work more in certain periods and less in others, but the average working time may not exceed the total working time.

The rest period should, as a rule, be 11 hours in any 24 hours and 35 hours in seven days, and the weekly time off should fall on a Sunday or other public holiday.

An employee is entitled to a break if the working hours during the day exceed five and a half hours. If the working time during the day exceeds eight hours, the breaks are to last a total of half an hour. Work outside the general working hours may only take place in special cases and within a specified period of time. This type of work must then be compensated by an addition to the hourly wage, which should amount to a minimum of 40 percent of the normal hourly wage. Night and Sunday work is only permitted when required

this kind of work. The right to payment for travel time is not regulated by law, therefore it should be specified in the employment contract.
