What are the conclusions of the report „The condition of NGOs 2021 – the most important facts”?

Klon/Jawor research has published a report „The condition of non-governmental organizations 2021 – the most important facts”. It contains key data from the 9th edition of the study „The condition of non-governmental organizations”, which Klon/Jawor has been implementing since 2002.

There are 70,000 active social organizations in Poland that actually operate. There are many more of them in the National Court Register, but according to GUS estimates, only about half of those registered operate. The Klon/Jawor Association has been researching the social sector for 20 years in the study „The condition of non-governmental organizations”. In 2021, its 9th edition took place, the aim of which was to describe the current situation of associations and foundations, as well as to look at the changes that the pandemic has brought.

66% of organizations say that the pandemic has negatively affected their situation. This is confirmed by data on the organization’s resources, both financial and human: the organization’s revenues decreased, especially smaller, more local ones (in 2020, half of the associations and foundations had no more than PLN 26,000 per year). In addition, there was a decrease in people working for social organizations (in 2021, the average organization cooperating with volunteers could count on the support of 5 people a year, in 2015 it was 10 people).

Despite the difficult operating conditions and smaller resources, 38% of organizations took new actions as a result of the pandemic, including those that were to counteract its negative effects. Half of the social organizations have moved at least some of their activities to the Internet in order to reach the audience.

The basic challenge of social organizations, as confirmed by each edition of the survey, is the difficulty in accessing funds for activities. It is indicated by 67% of organizations. Another of the problems of the organization are the burden of formalities and problems with the bureaucracy of public administration. There is also a lack of people ready to selflessly engage in the activities of foundations or associations, and half of the organizations today struggle with maintaining financial liquidity.

Although the mood among associations and foundations is not the best – 35% of organizations rated the conditions in 2021 as worse than in 2020, and every fifth organization expects even worse conditions in 2022 compared to 2021 – the vast majority plan to continue operating, and 40% would even like to significantly expand their activities in the near future.
