On the other hand, 48% of employers consider creativity to be a deficit competence, and 41% consider cooperation with others, consisting in the ease of performing tasks as part of group work. The most important competence of the future was the ability to act in a situation of uncertainty.

The report shows that 72% of companies did not invest in human capital in 2021 and do not plan to do so in 2022; at the same time, 91% of the surveyed companies indicated that difficulties in acquiring employees with appropriate competences are a barrier to their operations.

As Katarzyna Dębkowska, head of the economic foresight team at PIE, pointed out, in the current situation, optimal management of competences by companies is particularly important, „because we are on the verge of the challenge of absorbing refugees from Ukraine by the labor market”.

„We estimate that in the next three months Polish companies could employ 253,000 women” – she said. She added that 3/4 of these jobs are jobs in accommodation and catering, trade and other services, i.e. sectors that are simultaneously looking for employees and are more focused on women. In order to facilitate the integration of refugees on the Polish market, the expert proposes to intensify activities in the field of m.in portal with a database of refugee competences, Polish language courses and industry training, as well as providing childcare and psychological assistance.

For 48% of the surveyed entrepreneurs, the „deficit competence” was creativity, i.e. the ease of finding non-obvious solutions. Many companies also declared that they lack people with specialized industry competences (45 percent) and the ability to cooperate with others based on the ease of performing tasks as part of group work (41 percent). Slightly fewer companies pointed to the shortage of employees with developed skills of „critical thinking”, i.e. rational and logical inference about the causes and effects of phenomena (36%). On the other hand, about 1/3 of employers felt a shortage of employees who could solve complex problems (33%) and characterized by cognitive flexibility, i.e. the ease of looking at a problem or event from many different perspectives in order to take appropriate action (32%).

According to the study, „the ability to act in a situation of uncertainty” has been recognized by all companies as the most important competence of the future. It received the highest average score of 4.21 (on a scale from 1 to 5). Companies predict that creativity (average rating of 4.01) and cooperation with others (4.02) will be of high importance in the future. Slightly lower importance respondents gave competence to take responsibility (3.99) and industry specialist competences (3.94).
