What are the conclusions of the 44th edition of the Labor Market Monitor?

The risk of losing employment is decreasing, but it is easier to find a new job – show the results of the latest, 44th edition of the Labor Market Monitor implemented by the Randstad Research Institute. At the same time, the study shows that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the situation of employees regarding the use of leaves has not changed. They still have a lot of overdue payments, and they answer business e-mails and phone calls during their vacation.

Research shows that the percentage of people who changed jobs (employer) is decreasing, and the percentage of those who changed their job within one workplace is growing. This may indicate that employers, knowing the problems with recruiting employees, try to maximize the potential of their employees by making promotions and changing grades within the existing employment structure. It is clearly visible that the greater tendency to change the employer is in those employee groups which – due to the nature of the work – do not give a greater chance for promotion within the company or for which the change of job does not require participation in a long recruitment process.

The issue of work-life balance is gaining importance, for example, due to the actions of the European Commission aimed at issuing a directive on the possibility of being „online”. e-mails during the holiday. The results, however, do not give an answer to who the sender of these e-mails or the callers are. The situation is different when the employer constantly violates the employee’s free time by outsourcing professional tasks, a slightly different – when the employee decides to pick up „in a friendly manner” call from a co-worker or provide him with some information by phone. Sometimes a customer also calls, who has not been properly informed about the employee’s leave. Undoubtedly, the employees also have to perform appropriate work – setting up an automatic response on the e-mail, appropriate advance information to colleagues and clients about the planned vacation date or appointing a replacement person. Therefore, the issue of managing vacation time or time after work requires educating not only employers, but a much wider group of people.

Research also shows that employees expect greater flexibility in the labor market – for people currently working in fixed working hours, it would be more beneficial to be able to start working within a certain period of time, so that they could freely decide on the time of starting and finishing work. A certain degree of freedom may also be a factor increasing job satisfaction among people working in a task-based mode. Shift work is the least popular among employees, although it also has its supporters. Interestingly, it is quite difficult to encourage people to work shifts, and if it does, employees do not allow themselves to think about the possibility of working at night (turning off the day shift). The way of performing work is undoubtedly the element that is taken into account by employees when taking up or changing jobs. Where there is a need for shift work, especially with night work, employers may have significant difficulties in recruiting employees. For this reason, these positions are employed by foreign workers who accept this type of working conditions more easily.
