How to increase the share of women in managerial positions in Poland?

Women in managerial positions in Poland are still in the minority. There are only 15% of women on the boards of companies, and female CEOs are only 6%.

„Women’s empowerment is not just an essentially moral issue, it’s an economically indisputable issue,” said Christine Lagarde, one of the most prominent women in the financial world. We have known for quite a long time that thepresence of women in managerial positions makes companies develop better and more stable, and that increasing the share of women on boards would significantly affect the growth of global GDP. Subsequent studies only confirm that equality in business is… the best business. And yet, almost nothing is changing and according to the latest McKinsey & Company report „Win-win: How to better use the potential of women in the Polish economy”, the representation of women on the boards of companies in Poland is 15 percent, of which we have only 6 percent.

Having a ready recipe for financial success, which is to increase the participation of women in the authorities of companies, the business world is extremely reluctant to implement it. Why is this happening? There are certainly many reasons, starting with the very primitive – power and money. However, many companies decide (in the spirit of implementing the 5th Sustainable Development Goal, which is the empowerment of women, also in the area of business) to implement strategies based on gender equality. Mechanisms are being created to ensure equal treatment of women and men, from recruitment to professional development and career. Some companies also decide to implement quotas in management boards.

And yet we still have an embarrassing pay gap and a lack of women in top positions. In order to change this situation in Poland, a social and cultural revolution is necessary to deal with the stereotypical roles of women and men in the family, introducing a real sharing of parental, caring and domestic duties. Then women will begin to realize themselves in professional work and reach for the highest positions. But this is not enough. Companies need to change from the inside – real support for women on their way to the top means changing the rules of the game. Today’s expectations, rules and requirements for the highest positions in business were created by men for men. That is why so few women decide, despite the seemingly favorable conditions in the company, to accept such a challenge. This is a real taboo in business, and it is high time to tackle it by including women in the process of changing the conservative approach to power and creating with them a truly diverse and inclusive space. This will be the best business for all of us.
