How has the pandemic affected the responsibilities and development of employees?

Over the past year, the labor market has been experiencing a kind of rollercoaster – from laying off employees due to the closure of industries, to imposing additional obligations on them due to staff shortages.

The latest report „People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce view” shows, however, that for every fourth man and almost every fifth woman, the opportunities for their development during the pandemic have increased.

The pandemic has caused a lot of turmoil in the labor market and has had an impact on many sectors of the economy. Employers more often than before had to make decisions related to restrictions in enterprises, as well as adapt the mode of work to the prevailing epidemic conditions. ADP, a leader in HR and payroll services in the „People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce view” survey, examined how the pandemic has affected employee responsibilities as well as their development opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After more than a year of the pandemic, employees have already got used to the dynamically changing reality. During this entire period, it would seem that career opportunities and abilities will have a barrier, but according to the study conducted by ADP „People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce view”, half of Polish employees admit that their development opportunities have not changed during the pandemic. In addition, 26% of men admit that their prospects have increased; 17% of Polish women are of the same opinion.

„The transition to remote work has meant that the development of employees, e.g. in terms of handling digital technologies, has improved significantly. They have gained new experiences that in the future will certainly help them in everyday functioning in their organizations. It is worth noting, however, that the report „People at Work 2021: A Global Workforce view” shows that only in half of the cases supervisors took care of the necessary equipment for employees to work. Such signals raise concerns that employees may not have been properly trained or that due to insufficient equipment they may feel that their development has not progressed – says Anna Barbachowska, HR Business Partner at ADP Poland.

Not all employees can boast that during the pandemic they have gained new opportunities, m.in because their position has been liquidated and duties have been distributed among other people. According to ADP data, every second respondent admits that due to the dismissal of someone from his position, his role in the company has changed or he has assumed additional responsibilities. Interestingly, men (53%) were more likely to undertake additional tasks than women (46%). The situation is similar in European countries, where the rate among men was 48% and among women 43%.

– More frequent undertaking of additional tasks by men may result from the fact that during the pandemic, it was women who more often gave up employment in favor of private life, including care for remotely learning children. According to the ADP survey, 44% of employees admit that during the pandemic their employer did not give them the opportunity to share their work or tasks with their colleagues. Therefore, some people could not afford to take on additional tasks, knowing that they may not be able to cope with the already difficult form of work – continues Barbachowska.

Due to the pandemic, employee benefits such as fruit Tuesdays or the sports package have lost their importance. Much more often, however, it can be seen that employers are trying to support the well-being of employees. According to a report prepared by ADP, 52% of employees admit that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the employer took care of their well-being. The most appreciated people are people 55+, who believe that the employer notices their contribution to the company’s work. Still, one in two Polish employees think they were more comfortable with the way they could perform their duties.

– The pandemic has re-evaluated the needs of employees and the benefits they expect from their superiors. It is also worth adding that support for employed people is currently extremely important. The stress accumulated for over a year significantly affects the well-being, but also the effectiveness of employees. Therefore, it is worth taking care not only of their appreciation, but also of their mental health, so that after the end of the pandemic, it does not turn out that a well-trained person whom we have great appreciation for does not have to use the help of a psychologist in connection with stress and problems that he experienced during the pandemic – concludes Anna Barbachowska.
