When should the employer provide meals?

An employer hiring employees to work in particularly arduous conditions, related to high physical effort, should provide them with one hot meal, which must be properly balanced. It should contain up to 55% carbohydrates, about 30-35% fats, 15% proteins and a high caloric value, i.e. a minimum of 1000 kcal.

As you can see, this is not a very dietary meal, but it shouldn’t be either, as it is only intended for those employees who do hard, physical work. A detailed discussion of cases in which a hot meal should be provided can be found in the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of May 28, 1996 on preventive meals and drinks.

Meals should be provided to employees carrying out the work:

  • related to physical effort resulting in an effective energy expenditure of the body over 2000 kcal (8374 kJ) in men and over 1100 kcal (4605 kJ) in women during a shift,
  • related to physical effort causing, during a work shift, the effective energy expenditure of the body above 1500 kcal (6280 kJ) in men and above 1000 kcal (4187 kJ) in women, performed in closed rooms where, for technological reasons, the temperature is constantly below 10 ° C or the thermal load index (WBGT) is above 25 ° C,
  • related to physical effort causing, during a work shift, the effective energy expenditure of the body above 1500 kcal (6280 kJ) in men and above 1000 kcal (4187 kJ) in women, performed in the open space in winter; the winter period is considered to be the period from November 1 to March 31,
  • underground,
  • related to the removal of the effects of natural disasters and other random events.
