What is safe work on scaffolding?

Before starting work on the scaffolding, check:

  • does the scaffolding have handrails at a height of 1.1 m (with a system to the can is a height of 1 m)?
  • does the platform fill the entire surface in the interior of the scaffolding?
  • are there manifolds in the piers to allow access to the scaffolding from the inside?
  • did the employer provide a ladder to enter the scaffolding?
  • is the scaffolding too safe from tipping over anchors or behind shots?
  • does the passable scaffold have smooth brakes?

Work on the scaffolding may be carried out by an employee dressed in workwear, adjusted for the season, work gloves, full shoes with a non-slip sole, anti-pussive insert and under the toe toe and a protective helmet with an current expiry date, as specified by the manufacturer. It should also be equipped with other personal protective equipment depending on the nature of the work carried out on the scaffolding.

Before starting work, the worker should undergo a work plan and be familiar with the instructions for safe operation of the equipment used at work and with the information contained in the safety data sheets of the chemicals used.

An employee may enter a contract only if it has been received by a person with building rights.

The scaffolding must be set on a stable and dehydratedsurface. Scaffolding feet should stand on sleepers perpendicular to the wall of the building.

The platform of the scaffolding should be:

  • full and protected against uncontrolled displacement,
  • equipped on all external sides with a protective handrail at a height of 1,1 m (or 1 m for system scaffolding) and a curb with a height of 0,15 m and an intermediate handrail,
  • equipped with an internal railing if the scaffolding is moved away from the building at a distance of more than 0,2 m,
  • unencumbered (information about the permeable burden the employer should display on the bridge).

If it is not possible to use the inner railing, the work platform should be extended by the use of a console. The highest platform should not protrude more than 1.5 m above the last line of anchors. Platforms in communication lines must have mandibles closed.

The scaffolding can only be accessed from the inside and on specially designed ladders. Communication platforms should not be more than 20 m from the workplace.  The scaffolding structure must:

  • be stable and protected against tipping withshots or anchors,
  • not more than 3 m above the last anchor line.

Around the scaffolding should be designated a danger zone with a width of at least 6 m or tightly secure the structure with protective nets. The metal scaffolding should be grounded. Passable scaffolding may be used only if the brakes are fastened on at least two wheels diagonally.

It is notallowed:

  • Perform the installation of scaffolding if the employee does not have a booklet of assembly issued by the Institute of Mechanization of Construction and Rock Mining in Warsaw.
  • Install scaffolding without the use of fall protection.
  • Enter from the outside after the scaffolding structure.
  • Climb the handrails.
  • Carry people on passable scaffolding.
  • Work on scaffolding after dark, without adequatelighting artificial go, during dense fog, rainfall, snow and golovlops, during a storm or strong wind.
  • Leave materials on the platforms after work is complete.
