What is job instruction?

One of the two types of initial training in the field of health and safety is job instruction. It consists in conveying and familiaring the employee with the specifics of the work performed while maintaining health and safety rules.

Health and safety job instruction is carried out before being allowed to work at a specific workplace. It applies to:

  • a worker in a working and other position who is exposed to health-damaging, disruptive or dangerous factors,
  • the employee transferred to such a workplace,
  • a student practicing a profession,
  • student practicing.

During the health and safety training, the employee is to be familiar with possible risks from machines, other technical equipment, other means of work, especially tools, energy factors, chemicals and mixtures therein, materials. The trained must also know how to avoid the negative effects of these risks.

Of course, the health and safety job instruction must familiarize the employee with safe ways of handling the means of work that he will use in practice. In addition, a worker working in several workplaces should receive health and safety training in each of those positions.

Not everyone in the company can train employees in a position. Thus, the health and safety job instruction is carried out by the person in charge of the employees, appointed by the employer or the employer himself, provided that they have the appropriate qualifications and professional experience, and are trained in the methods of conducting such instruction.

The health and safety job instruction consists of:

  • which concerns means of production and safety conditions,
  • which concerns the safe way of doing work, including self-employment.

The training shall end with a check on the worker’s skills and knowledge regarding the safe performance of work at his/her workplace.

A properly conducted health and safety instruction should be divided into the following phases:

  • initial interview of the instructor with the instructed employee,
  • a demonstration and explanation of the work process to be carried out by the employee,
  • the employee’s probationary work when the instructor corrects the activities (handling of means of work, etc.),
  • independent work of the instructed under the supervision of the trainee,
  • the instructor’s verification and assessment of the skills and knowledge of the worker in the safe performance of the work.

The minimum duration of initial health and safety training is 8 lesson hours (lasting 45 min). The exception is administrative and office workers exposed to nuisance factors. For them, the minimum training time is 2 lesson hours.

In training, it is necessary to build on the framework programme of health and safety instruction, which contains the Regulations of the Minister of Economy and Labour of 27 July 2004 on training in the field of health and safety at work (Journal of Laws No 180, item 1860 as amended). However, it always needs to be adapted to the specific conditions and requirements of your company and workplace.

The health and safety instruction shall be duly confirmed in the initial training card in the field of health and safety at work.
