What are the tasks of sanepid?

The National Sanitary Inspection (PIS)  has been set up to carry out public health tasks. Their implementation consists in the exercise of preventive and ongoing sanitary supervision and conducting preventive and anti-vaccine activities in the field of infectious diseases and other diseases caused by environmental conditions, as well as conducting educational and health activities.

The National Sanitary Inspection is a specialised institution which has been set up to carry out public health tasks, in particular by supervising the following conditions: environmental hygiene, occupational hygiene in workplaces, radiation hygiene, hygiene of teaching and education processes, hygiene of rest and recreation, health food, nutrition and cosmetic products, hygiene and sanitation to be provided by medical personnel, equipment and premises in which health services are provided. This surveillance is intended to protect human health from the adverse effects of environmental harm and nuisance and to prevent the emergence of diseases, including infectious and occupational diseases. The performance of the abovementioned tasks consists in the exercise of preventive and ongoing sanitary supervision and the conduct of preventive and anti-vaccine activities in the field of infectious diseases and other diseases caused by environmental conditions, as well as the conduct of educational and health activities.

Article 4 of the LAW on the PIS provides for day-to-day health surveillance, and the tasks mentioned in this regard are also merely exemplary. The scope of the Inspection in this area shall be to monitor compliance with the provisions laying down hygiene and health requirements, in particular as regards:

  • environmental hygiene, and in particular water intended for human consumption, air in premises intended for human habitation, soil, water and other elements of the environment to the extent laid down in separate legislation;
  • maintaining the sound hygiene status of immovable property, workplaces, institutions, public facilities and facilities, roads, streets and passenger and freight transport by rail, road, air and sea;
  • the conditions for the production, transport, storage and sale of food and the conditions of mass caterers;
  • supervision of food health quality;
  • the health conditions for the production of materials and the marketing of materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, cosmetic products and other articles which may affect human health;
  • health conditions of the working environment;
  • the requirements laid down in the provisions on the content of certain substances in cigarette smoke;
  • prohibit the manufacture and placing on the market in the territory of the Republic of Poland of substitutes or new psychoactive substances.
