What are the safety rules for work in low temperatures?

Health and safety regulations clearly regulate the conditions under which work in low temperatures should take place. In most cases, these conditions must be adapted to its type and mode. In other cases, when work takes place outside a closed building, the regulations specify the number and length of breaks and regeneration meals.

Labour law and health and safety regulations define the minimum and maximum temperature for employees who perform their work while sitting or moving.

For office workers and those working in a sitting position, it should be at least 18 ° C indoors – both in summer and winter -. In summer it should not exceed 24 ° C, in winter – 22 ° C.

The minimum temperature for employees working in production halls or performing their work on the move should not be lower than 14 ° C. In this case, the maximum heat conditions in the performance of its tasks are not specified.

The working temperature in offices and production halls is determined by the ordinance of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of September 26, 1997. It is located in the Journal of Laws from 2003

The regulations define under what conditions and on what terms employees can perform their duties outside the building, outdoors, during the winter months.

As an employer, you have a duty to provide your employees with:

  • Adequate protective clothing which is properly insulated at the same time. Clothing should be certified and adapted to work in specific conditions and temperatures.
  • Unlimited access to hot drinks. This applies to work in the open air when the temperature drops below 10 ° C.
  • Regenerative meals, when employees perform their duties in the open and their caloric loss is greater than 1500 kcal for men and 1000 kcal for women.
  • A room in which the employee takes a break from work or in which he stays while warming up. The temperature should not fall below 16 ° C.

Working in winter conditions is also associated with certain limitations. They result from the risks associated with the performance of tasks in low temperatures, strong winds and often intense rainfall. When the wind speed exceeds 10 m / s, the employee should not perform tasks on: scaffolding, platforms, cranes or workstations that are set at heights, attached to the building structure or other elements.

By purchasing the right workwear, providing access to hot drinks and regenerative meals, you provide your subordinates with the right conditions.

Compliance with all health and safety regulations, especially those relating to work in winter conditions, requires not only their knowledge, but also knowledge and experience.
