What are the required values of artificial lighting intensity for individual workplaces?

In accordance with par. 26 of the Regulation of the Minister of Labor and Social Policy of September 26, 1997 on general provisions on occupational health and safety (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2003, No. 169, item 1650, as amended), both natural lighting, as well as artificial (electric) should meet the requirements specified in Polish Standards

Moreover, it should be remembered that day lighting should be provided in the premises of permanent work, unless it is impossible or inappropriate due to the production technology, and the employer obtained the consent of the competent state provincial sanitary inspector issued in agreement with the district labor inspector for the use of electric lighting only.

The standard regulating the lighting requirements is PN-EN 12464-1: 2012: Light and lighting. The above standard specifies in detail the lighting requirements for people in indoor workplaces where the needs of visual comfort and visual performance of normally sighted people meet. All typical visual tasks are considered, including display screen equipment (DSE).

In order to determine in detail the requirements of the illuminance values for individual rooms in specific types of industrial activity, please refer to the given standard (PN-EN 12464-1: 2012).

It should also be remembered that illuminance is only one of the parameters to ensure adequate lighting. You cannot forget about parameters such as:

  • luminance distribution,
  • glare,
  • directivity of light,
  • colour rendering and the appearance of the colour of light,
  • flickering.
