What are the most dangerous jobs?

Particularly dangerous works, such as, for example, at heights – already above 1 m above the ground level, e.g. renovation works carried out without stopping the plant’s operation, or works with the use of chemical substances are carried out on a daily basis in many plants. The lack of appropriate procedures in this regard, in the event of an accident at work, may have very serious consequences for the employer, people managing employees, and even for the health and safety service.

Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of September 26, 1997 on general provisions on health and safety at work (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2003, No. 169, item 1650, as amended) defines four types of work especially dangerous. These are

  • construction, demolition, renovation and assembly works carried out without stopping the operation of the workplace or its part
  • On the height
  • in confined spaces
  • with the use of hazardous materials

Particularly dangerous works performed in some branches of industry or energy are regulated by regulations other than the ordinance on general health and safety regulations.

Pursuant to § 80 sec. 1 of the Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of September 26, 1997 on general provisions on health and safety at work (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2003, No. 169, item 1650, as amended) – hereinafter referred to as general provisions on health and safety at work, particularly dangerous works are understood as works referred to in Section IV, Chapter 6, and works defined as particularly dangerous in other provisions on health and safety at work or in the operating instructions for devices and installations, as well as other works of increased risk or performed in difficult conditions, considered by the employer as particularly dangerous.

Each employer should remember that he is obliged to establish and update a list of particularly hazardous works occurring in the workplace. Employees, and especially those managing employees, should know what work is considered particularly dangerous in a given workplace. In connection with the performance of particularly hazardous work, it is necessary to ensure appropriate safety measures when performing the work, but also, no less important, to plan the procedure in the event of an accident at work or other event.

When carrying out such, the employer must ensure:

  • direct supervision of this work by persons designated for this purpose,
  • appropriate security measures,
  • employee training, including, in particular, personal division of labour, the sequence of tasks, health and safety requirements for individual activities (§ 81 general provisions on health and safety at work)
