What are the health and safety rules for welding?

When carrying out hazardous fire-fighting work:

  • Secure all combustible materials. These include, for example:
    • articles of paper, cardboard,
    • wooden objects,
    • combustible fabrics, but also melting during smoking
    • chemical products, especially classified as: F: flammable / highly flammable, F+: extremely flammable, O: oxidizing and all others for which the safety data sheet is given to avoid contact of the product with fire.
    • installations with combustible media, e.g. acetyllene and oxidising media, e.g. oxygen
    • flammable structures of rooms and buildings, etc.
  • It is necessary to take into account what work was previously carried out in a particular place or room. If work has been carried out on the use of flammable liquids or gases, their content in the air shall be measured. If it does not exceed 10% of their lower explosive limit, welding can begin. Otherwise, wait until the result is within these limits.
  • During welding work, equipment must be provided at all times to enable rapid extinguishing of the fire, e.g. fire extinguisher, fire extinguishing blanket.
  • After the welding work is completed, it is necessary to inspect the place of work, but also the adjacent areas.
  • Only technically efficient equipment that is protected against the possibility of fire should be used for welding work.
