What are the fire hazards in large-scale facilities?

Large-scale buildings in fire protection regulations are classified as production and storage buildings. Due to their technological processes and the type of materials stored there is a particular fire hazard.

Factors that contribute significantly to the formation of fire include:

  • disordered storage of materials,
  • excessive number of packaging of cardboard, paper, polyethylene film, wood wool, pallets and wooden shelving,
  • poor location of buildings and storage sites,
  • combustible construction of buildings,
  • too large areas and volumes of objects,
  • general unloading inside and outside buildings and storage areas,
  • non-compliance with the precautionary rules for the handling of fire by workers (especially smokers and welders),
  • lack of supervision of the fire safety status of the facilities,
  • lack or malfunctioning alarm and extinguishing devices.

The main installations to be installed in such facilities and which have a real impact on fire protection are sprinkler and smoke. They must act on their part, that is, without human intervention.

Execution and installation of all equipment should be carried out in accordance with a project agreed in terms of fire protection. by a fire safety expert.

It is only after appropriate tests and tests have been carried out to confirm their correct operation that they can be authorised for use. In addition, during operation at least once a year in accordance with the rules set out in Polish standards, the manufacturer’s documentation should be reviewed and maintained.
