Is the sanitary and epidemiological booklet still valid?

Sanitary and epidemiological booklet is a common name, its full name is a health book for sanitary and epidemiological purposes. It is indispensable for catering workers, as well as in any profession where an employee has contact with a large number of people or children up to 6 years of age.
The 2008 Act on preventing and combating infections and diseases indicates that the Sanitary and Epidemiological Booklet no longer applies, but is replaced by a sanitary and epidemiological decision. Unfortunately, the act does not specify what such a certificate looks like and thus some doctors and clinics still use the form of booklets. However, according to the applicable regulations, a certificate is a sufficient document. However, regardless of the form used by the particular issuing entity, the procedure and tests are the same.

In the case of people taking up or performing work in which it is possible to transfer an infection or an infectious disease to other people, the condition of performing work is the preparation of a sanitary and epidemiologicalbook. This is to ensure the safety of others. These tests are mandatory for people who work in positions related to food and water intended for human consumption, as well as in work related to oral medications.

A sanitary book is also required by a person who is responsible for washing dishes and containers for food, water or medicines.

The conducted tests make it possible to check whether the person who will come into contact with food at work is not infected with typhoid fever, paratyphoid A, B, C, and Salmonella and Shigella. As part of the test, it is also possible to detect whether the employee is a carrier of mycobacterium tuberculosis or other pathogens, the carrier of which excludes the possibility of working with food.
In order to prepare a sanitary and epidemiological book, it is necessary to visit the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station, where it is necessary to leave material for examination (usually for 3 consecutive days). After receiving the test results, you should go to the occupational medicine physician who may order additional tests. On the basis of the medical examination and the results of laboratory tests, the doctor issues a medical certificate on:

  • no contraindications to work or
  • temporary or permanent contraindication to work.

In the case of a decision that the performance of work, whether temporary or permanent, is contraindicated, it is impossible to perform official duties related to food or medicines.
The regulations do not specify the period after which it is necessary to perform repeated tests. Such a decision is made by a physician based on the tests performed and laboratory results, as well as after obtaining information on the type and place of work.

The employer should cover the cost of making a sanitary and epidemiologicalbooklet. However, in practice, employers most often look for employees who already have a valid sanitary and epidemiologicalbooklet. This not only reduces costs, but also saves time.

The cost of purchasing the book itself is an expense of a few zlotys. The cost of testing the material for the carrier of mycobacterium tuberculosis or other pathogens ranges from PLN 60 to PLN 100. The medical examination itself costs about PLN 50-100, but you should also take into account the cost of any additional tests that may be ordered by a doctor.
