How to strengthen mental resilience at work?

Mental resilience is a feature of our personality that is responsible for how we deal with difficult situations, failures, stress. It can be assumed that a person’s mental resilience consists of the willingness to take up challenges, treating them as an opportunity and not a threat, self-confidence, a sense of control in a given situation, the belief that we are the smiths of our fate, as well as commitment to what we do.

These qualities allow us to look to the future with optimism, to accept failures at work as one of the stages on the way to the goal. Mental resilience, or lack thereof, manifests itself in stressful situations. It can be seen in mastery, the ability to work under time pressure, in the way of dealing with conflicts.

Mental resilience is a trait that is extremely desirable by employers. In some professions, it is necessary to be able to do everyday work at all. It is difficult to imagine a flight controller, a doctor or a policeman, unable to cope with stress, without certainty in making decisions on which human life often depends.

Nevertheless, being mentally resilient is useful in any profession, allows for self-development, gives a sense of satisfaction with work. And it is certainly worth working on strengthening this feature at home.

Let’s start with the fact that if in some situations or in some area of life we are mentally resilient, we have no guarantee that this will always be the case. This feature changes, it depends on many factors. The decrease in immunity can be the result of permanent stress, accumulation of failures, deterioration of health, negative impact of the environment in which we live.

It is worth taking care of your mental well-being, looking for effective ways to stress at work, to cope with difficult emotions. Just as harmful as outbursts of anger is the suppression of emotions. In strengthening mental resilience will help work on self-confidence, self-esteem, self-acceptance of our pros and cons – alone or with the help of a specialist – psychologist or psychotherapist.
