How to ensure the personal safety of social workers?

Social workers are often exposed to danger in the performance of their professional duties.

Training to increase the level of personal safety of a social worker should take place at least once every two years. The right to the training referred to in the previous sentence is granted to social workers employed in: a social welfare centre, a social services centre or a district family assistance center.

Let us remind you that the amendment to the Act on Social Assistance of 15 April 2021 introducing m.in training to increase the level of personal safety of social workers was a response to the demands coming for several years from entities applying in practice the provisions in the field of social assistance, and above all from the environment of social workers. In addition to the provisions on the safety of social workers, it should be clarified what is the state of higher necessity and what is necessary defense. In situations that are directly life-threatening or health in connection with the work performed, the social worker may have to use one of the two countertypes listed in the previous sentence.

At this point, it should be emphasized that the discussed amendment also introduced changes to the Act of 19 July 2019 amending the Act on Social Assistance and the Act on Mental Health Protection. These changes consist in extending the deadlines introduced by this Act for reaching the required qualifications and requirements in terms of the level of employment in round-the-clock care facilities for people: disabled, chronically ill or elderly.

The deadlines of 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022 for reaching certain requirements have been extended by one or two years respectively.
