How to ensure safety when building silos?

Work on the construction of silos for loose or liquid materials – due to the processes and tools used – is classified as hazardous. There are a large number of hazards that can cause severe or even fatal accidents. Ensuring the safety of employees requires appropriate measures by the employer.

The construction of silos takes place in large production halls, where such processes are carried out as: rolling, welding, cutting, grinding, transport of heavy elements (using an overhead crane, lift trucks). There are many more jobs, but with the ones mentioned above there are numerous risks, for example:

  • moving parts,
  • hot surfaces,
  • sharp elements and edges,
  • hit by a falling element,
  • dust,
  • fumes,
  • radiation,
  • noise,
  • chipping,
  • electric shock,
  • deduction,
  • vibrations,
  • fall from height.

Ensuring the safety of employees is not only a priority, it is an obligation of every employer included in the Labour Code. Below are some examples of good practices that will contribute to safer work and reduce the number of possible accidents.

  • Work safety should start with the beginning of a given shift. It consists in the fact that in each hall the master and the crew discuss the scope of work on a given day and the necessary health and safety issues for about 30 minutes.
  • A good practice is also conducted by a foreman, the so-called short checklist. This allows you to check the security status and whether there are any new threats. It includes the following points:
  • admission of an employee to work,
  • workplace surroundings,
  • equipment and fittings,
  • fire protection, including evacuation,
  • noticed irregularities, new threats,
  • personal protective equipment.
  • Organization of work in the hall. The space in the hall must be organized in such a way that each crew can work freely and safely.
  • There is a high risk of noise in such large halls and in the ongoing work. In such a case, activities and works should be organized in such a way that they are divided in time and changes.
