How should the manning be planned for vertical transport using a tower or quick-assembly crane?

When performing transport works using a tower or quick-assembly crane, it is necessary to provide a minimum of three people – a crane operator, a hook operator and a signaller. It is unacceptable to perform these activities simultaneously by one person.

The signaller and the hook operator are obliged to use during work elements of clothing or equipment which are visible from the crane cabin and which distinguish them from other workers.

The signaller and the crane operator communicate in an understandable way using a communication device during the operation of the crane. In the event of a communication device failure, the signaller shall communicate with the crane operator using manual signals.

The crane operator can be a person who is at least 18 years old and has a valid qualification certificate for crane operation and has a current medical certificate stating the absence of health contraindications to perform work at this position.

A whistleblower or a hooker may be a person who is at least 18 years old and has a medical certificate stating that there are no health contraindications to perform work in these positions.

The specific requirements depend, of course, on the employer. However, there are certain conditions that must be met by each person Hook during work gets acquainted with the load, determines its mass, the location of the center of gravity, the location of the attachment points and applies the appropriate element for its hanging and fastening. The hooked load holding during its movement shall be permitted only by appropriate means to enable the load to be given the correct direction, e.g. directional cables. On the other hand, the signaller during operation determines the route of the moved cargo, observes the load during transport and issues appropriate commands. In the event of a dangerous situation, the whistleblower stops transport work and warns of the danger. The employer is obliged to check whether the employee has the necessary rights, which include a current medical certificate of the absence of contraindications to work at heights.

A person who wants to perform professional activities at a height should also be familiarized with the occupational risk assessment and procedures in force in a given workplace. It is the responsibility of the employer to equip the employee with personal protective equipment and to train on how to use them.
