How should first aid be given for flooding?

Knowing the basic rules of helping with flooding can save someone’s life. When providing assistance to a drowning person, the most important element is to take care of your own safety. There are known cases of double drowning. In addition, it is important to call an ambulance.

Contrary to appearances, a drowning person does not call for help and does not throw himself violently on the surface of the water. It often sinks unnoticed by sunbathers. You can recognize her by the fact that she makes movements that are a bit like climbing a climbing wall. She usually doesn’t have the strength to cry out for help because she’s focused on getting some air. In addition, a drowning person has closed eyes or absent vision, and his hands are spread on the surface of the water.

The most important factor acting to the detriment of the drowning person is time, which is why a very important element of first aid is a quick and effective response. Then you should keep calm – it is difficult, because usually in such situations we act on impulse, which is associated with the secretion of adrenaline. At the very beginning, we should take care of our safety – there are known and common cases of drowning when trying to save.

The most important rules for helping a drowning person are:

  • Call an ambulance.
  • Immediately alert the lifeguard (if it is a guarded swimming pool).
  • Stay calm and choose the safest form of help for you. You can throw a lifebuoy, a rope or give a safety buoy to a drowning person.
  • If you decide to save a drowning person on your own, try to swim up to him „from behind” and try to make contact. It is worth remembering that the success: „the drowning razor grabs” has its justification. Therefore, such a person may try to grab himself tightly and thus prevent him from making movements.
  • If a drowning person panics, try to overpower him and safely tow him to the shore.

The most important rules for helping a drowning person at the shore are:

  • Check if the victim is conscious – try to shake him slightly, as he may be slightly stunned.
  • Clear the airways – put your hand on your forehead and gently tilt the victim’s head, then slightly raise her jaw and clean her mouth.
  • Check if the victim is breathing – put your head to your mouth and at the same time observe the movement of the chest. If after 10 sec. You will find a lack of reaction, proceed to respiratory-circulatory resuscitation.
  • First, take 5 rescue breaths, then braid your hands on the sternum and press hard for 30 seconds. Repeat this process until the injured person begins to breathe or until an ambulance arrives.
  • If the victim began to breathe independently, arrange it in a fixed lateral position, then cover it with a warm blanket.

The most important rules for helping a drowning person when jumping on the head:

  • If the person who jumped on the head is unconscious, then when towing it to the shore, it should be laid on its back. This is important because during the jump it could be enough for a spinal injury.
  • After reaching the shore, it is necessary to check the vital functions of the victim, and if he is not breathing, proceed to respiratory-circulatory resuscitation. However, if she breathes, her head should be immobilized. Preferably with an orthopedic collar, but as a last resort, you can use rolled clothes or a towel.
