How many accidents were there at work in 2021?

In 2021, 68,777 people were reported injured in accidents at work, 9.6% more than in 2020. The number of injured people per 1,000 employees, i.e. the so-called accident rate, also increased from 4.62 to 5.10 – said the Central Statistical Office. The most common cause of accidents at work was the incorrect behavior of the employee.

The Central Statistical Office has published a signal information „Accidents at work in 2021 – preliminary data”. In it, he stated that in 2021 the share of people injured in fatal accidents was 0.3 per cent (the same as in 2020), in severe accidents – 0.5 per cent (a decrease of 0.1 percentage points), and in accidents with a different effect it increased by 9.7 per cent.

The highest accident rate was recorded in podlaskie (6.53), opolskie (6.32) and warmińsko-mazurskie (6.13) voivodships, and the lowest in Mazowieckie voivodship (3.67) and Małopolskie voivodship (3.91).

The accident rate is the number of injured people per thousand workers. – For the calculation of the index, the average number of employees calculated as the arithmetic mean of two states (on December 31 of the previous year and December 31 of the current year) was used – explains the Central Statistical Office.

According to GUS data, the highest accident rate was recorded in the following sections: mining and quarrying (14.17), water supply; sewage and waste management; reclamation (13.23) and manufacturing (8.27), while the lowest in the sections: information and communication (0.74), financial and insurance activities (1.17) and other service activities (1.22).

According to the Central Statistical Office, the most common cause of accidents at work was considered to be incorrect behavior of an employee (60.8 percent), and the activity most often performed by the victim at the time of the accident was moving (38.1 percent). As many as 79.4% of people injured in accidents at work suffered limb injuries.

As the Central Statistical Office explains, an accident at work is considered to be a sudden event caused by an external cause, causing injury or death, which occurred in connection with work.

The final data, as declared by the Central Statistical Office, will be available in the publication, which will be published in November 2022.
