How does long-term work in asedentary position affect the body?

It is widely accepted that office work is not burdensome for the body. However, it has been proven that prolonged sitting is not a natural activity for humans.

First of all, sitting, we stop our circulation. That is why it is so important to keep a right or obtuse angle under the knees. What’s more, blood flow further blocks, for example, putting a leg on the leg. During sitting, the activity of the heart also decreases. Reduced blood supply also contributes to the feeling of fatigue. People who do white-collar work are often exhausted after it, just like workers in labor positions. It also leads to the astringency of the legs or the feeling that they are swollen all the time.

The sitting position negatively affects the osteoarticular system. At first, the body makes itself felt through pain, but if you do nothing about it for a long period of time, changes such as arthritis may occur. A comfortable position is when our feet are freely placed on the ground, the elbows are on the armrests at the height of the tabletop, and the height of the seat is set so that the eye, if we straighten up, falls on the upper edge of the screen.

People working at the computer often lean forward and make the so-called round back. Then the chest muscles contract, and consequently the respiratory capacity of the lungs decreases. This is a simple recipe for headaches. It also has a negative effect on the digestive system and can cause problems with defecation.

If long-term sedentary work concerns you, be sure to combine it with physical activity in your free time. Thanks to this, you will improve your posture and efficiency of the body. It is worth applying especially to stretching exercises. Not without significance is also a healthy diet. In the process of doing work, do not give up the break! If you work sedentary, avoid sitting in front of the computer for a long time after work. Breathing exercises are also very helpful, which will help you relax and rest mentally after work.

In conclusion, every employer should provide employees with an ergonomic sedentary workplace, this is not a privilege, but an obligation. Importantly, employees are also entitled to short breaks, for each hour of work in front of the computer – 5 minutes. Sitting for 8 hours a day can have negative effects on health and has a huge impact on the employee. However, office work can be „disenchanted” by introducing joint exercises in the company, for example, or by providing employees with gym passes in the form of benefits. You can also encourage activity by promoting walking – for example, start a game in which employees receive rewards for the record of steps taken. Prevention is always better than cure – to take care of the right position when sitting before the ailments come.
