At what height should the fire extinguisher be hung?

The regulations do not specify the height at which the fire extinguisher should be placed. From a practical point of view, a height of approx. 140 cm is recommended for the top of the extinguisher. When removing the extinguisher from the hanger, the user should easily grasp the lever with his right or left hand, and the bottom of the extinguisher with the other hand in order to raise it to a height of approx. 3-5 cm while removing it from the hanger. It is also possible to put a fire extinguisher on the floor.

Fire regulations only define issues related to equipping the facility with fire extinguishers and their location. Pursuant to § 33 of the Regulation of the Minister of Interior and Administration of June 7, 2010 on fire protection of buildings, other structures and areas (Journal of Laws No. 109, item 719), fire extinguishers in the facilities must be located:

  1. in easily accessible and visible places, in particular:
  2. at the entrances to buildings,
  3. in staircases,
  4. in the corridors,
  5. at the exits of the rooms to the outside;
  6. in places not exposed to mechanical damage and the action of heat sources (stoves, heaters);
  7. in multi-storey buildings – in the same places on each storey, if the existing conditions allow it.

When placing fire extinguishers, the following conditions must be met:

  • the distance from any place in the facility where people may stay to the nearest fire extinguisher should not exceed 30 m;
  • fire extinguishers should be accessible with a width of at least 1 m.
